I'm not sure about NZ yet, but South Africa is most certainly not one of those countries that aim for the most skillful leader at this time. Unless you take deception as a good skill to have in government. In fact, the average Jo there prefers someone with a little bit of history on the criminal side to run the show, perhaps because the average Joe there is inclined to crime himself.

Absolute Elitism
I seem to be the only American who openly decries the demand that our politicians appear to 'average joes'. I don't want regular people in charge. I want the best. Like Lewis Thomas said about doctors: When my life is on the line, I'd rather have excellent surgical skills than an attractive bedside manner. In government, I'd rather have sound reasoning and judgment than eloquence or experience. What country can I find those in?
