Re: SP as Cheating
I've got to ask this question - How many times have you picked up a book done by a standard press and realized that not only is your writing style truly better, but your stories are truly better?
I always submit to standard press, I have had stories "accepted pending review" and then turned down in the final marketing meetings. In talking to more than a half dozen editors over the years I have been told repeatedly to keep submitting my work is good keep trying. I've even received some handwritten notes on rejection letters ect.
The reality is that unproven authors/unknown authors are fighting terrible odds. My rather roundabout approach to changing those odds has been to self publish. As my work builds a following (and it is doing so slowly and steadily) I can point to a sales history, I can point to book reviews and to competition entries. ISMERALDIS The Forging will be in the EPPY competition for 2009. The EPPY's are for self published books only, the winners not only get a handsome check, but one and one sit downs with mainstream publishers in NY. THAT is my goal, if I can't get in through the mail slot I'll do it with a cup of coffee and a winner.
In any event, neither of us will get anywhere without submitting. So keep writing and keep submitting.

I am off SP. I keep writing, I keep trying and one day I will succeed and if no I have at least had fun in the process. Everyone is free to have their own opinion and try their own way but for me SP is cheating.
