Hate and fear
are tools used to get people to act in unison.  In a country were there is relative peace and freedom of expression, it becomes difficult to use these tactics and people start inventing causes for hate and fear, like attacking the very freedom they want for themselves.  I doubt very much that those who want to force their agenda on everybody else are informing their followers of the true meaning and intent of religious freedom and keeping specific religious doctrine out of the state machinery.  Perhaps they are ignorant of this themselves.  I'm sure most of us know how many people have been harassed, molested and murdered by governments who were religiously biased.  The whole history of Europe is filled to the brim with the consequences of such bias.  My own ancestors fled from Europe since the 17th century because their governors didn't like them believing what they felt was right for them.  200-300 years later we had a State Religion and the SOS happened, in a less violent manner, but anybody not belonging to the "right" church knew very well how much more effort it took to be taken seriously on various issues.  If you supported an altogether different religion it just got worse.  So we sit with having to tolerate those who are not willing to tolerate us.  Longsuffering is a necessary trait in the human world if we want to work towards peace and freedom from oppression.

you are right -- if a church wants to marry gays, the secular government
has no business interfering.

they want no interference in displaying the 10 commandments or prayer in schools and yet they want such in the private activities of a church.

Kabu
Show me where in this post I do any generalizing in the least.
