It's the cyclical nature of it that has me thinking--
dramatic mood-swings-- bipolar? Might go a ways towards explaining his mother's problems, too. Heredity is part of the bi-polar issue.

This appears to be a very troubled kid! It's clear that he needs help, though what form that should take is impossible to decide 'at a distance', as it were. And you're right about the lack of competence of many therapists out there! Nonetheless, all I can say is that the parents had better make a serious effort at getting him some help soon! If the current pattern persists into his teens, he'll be in
real trouble...

Tell them to give him away.
Just kidding! Boy, I don't even want to think about this right now. It's the middle of the night and my brain is closing down.
Just keep loving him. Love makes the world go round.

It is so hard when it comes to your children. Everybody has ideas and to choose the right one - well, how do you do that? You need to be a professional yourself to be able to tell what will benefit him the most. I do hope he will get the proper help while he is still young.
