I think it comes from the fact that more women feel sad when they give birth to boys than to girls... at least that is what old people say in the islands... It probably has to do with hormones or something but when a woman has a boy she gets "sadder" ... so they said she got the blues... cuz baby boy's are dressed in blue... Its probably not true but that is what I heard when I asked your same question once in the Bahamas... and from there blue signified sad and the word "took" :-) Great poem and cute post.
