Kaboom - It's just like Mel Gibson being on an interview with the
now deceased Paula Yates (Bob Geldof's former wife or the deceased Michael Hutchence's former lover), and saying he wouldn't kiss a woman with tattoos. (Paula had a big highly visible one on her upper arm).
I'm not a fan of Mel Gibson, but as a 'tramp stamped' individual, he deserves a smack for that one.

Cringe
Oh gawd, my greatest fear, having my fans be disappointed to find I am not at all the person they imagined me to be! Ha Ha! But we all do it don't we? The writer we love most, in meeting one of us, is inspired by our creativity and wit so that the banality of getting to know one another is just skipped over! Uh, he is not a writer, but I used to play over a scene where I got in an eleveator where Harrison Ford was the only other occupant. By the time the doors opened, with my non-intrusive, subtle, respect, I'd won an invitation to coffee with him!

(After reading about how he didn't appreciate being kissed on the mouth by a total stranger woman in an elevator, something I WOULD NEVER DO!)

I go one better than Pat: I'll buy you a Guinness and we chat! And I fully agree with your response to that obsessive Stephen King fan - I couldn't have said it better myself.
It also made me try and think of authors I would like to meet (without intruding into their lives) - and I realized that the vast majority is no longer with us at all...

Re: That's the thing, Cringe... I'd like to be published and get feedback
I was very tempted to score points off this lady as others had done on their postings, and to a degree I think I didn't do too badly on that score though I know I strayed a little.
As for coffee, Pat - any time.

Re: Cringe, it'd be like give an inch take a mile to meet someone like that
To admire someone's work is one thing, and implies a respect. The word 'fan' has always distressed me a little because of 'fanatic' which always has warp speed word association in my mind with it's syllable twin 'lunatic.' Being a fan always brings to mind excess or fixation.
That's another thing, that lady who interviews authors she likes and find's it disappointing - well, again it's another downfall, it's that expectation, that need to connect further than page thumbing....don't know how you could distance yourself and be completely professional in that respect.

That's the thing, Cringe... I'd like to be published and get feedback
from readers, but from the writing group here and the odd way people change when you admit you're a writer, I've concluded it would be very off-putting to have people at you in the way that writer wanted to get at Mr. King. I don't suppose it occurs to her that he employs people to shield him from unwanted interruptions such as her... Nice, thought-provoking article. I'd like to buy you a cup of coffee some time. :)

Cringe, it'd be like give an inch take a mile to meet someone like that
I've decided I'll just have to weather that side of things when my books are published.
I guess it is a bit hard to see when one is in the middle of an obsession. I heard a woman who interviews authors say that she finds it best not to meet authors of books she has loved. It usually disappoints.
