In South Africa we never celebrated Halloween since those there of European descent are mostly from Dutch and French stock but we've seen a lot of it on American TV and in American movies.  I was under the impression the word was derived from Holy Evening and once took the day off work since I needed some rest.  I told my senior at the time that I wanted leave to celebrate Halloween and it seemed later on that some of my colleagues thought I was a Satanist.  Maybe they thought so anyway.  Only they will know.  I found that rather funny at the time.

Just now while we were out and about looking at Halloween stuff, my son said he wanted to be the Devil this year.  Not sure how long that will last or where it came from, but this is the first time I wish our pastor was here just to get her reaction to that.

Halloween can be first official holiday of the Church of the Better Self
and you, if you want to be an officer and incorporator can officiate.

kooka_lives - "Mommy, why can we dress up like devils in school but not

say prayers to God?"

I'm paraphrasing but I remember that sentiment being expressed by everyone's favorite pastor. According to her, and we both know that not too many true words ever came from her mouth, her 10 year old kid came home from school all upset about that one day.

All I could think to myself was that poor kid, (if the story was true) the poor little twisted budding religious nutjob is following in his mother's footsteps. When I was that age, Halloween was the highlight of the fall season and being a catholic, we got the next day off school (All Saints Day). Which in itself is part of the history of Halloween as the catholic church adopted pagan holidays to sign up as many pagans as possible.
