Interesting figures
The trend this author has found is certainly indicative of moral corruption amongst those who belief in a popular version of God in general.  I would also like to see the stats broken down into the various kinds of theisms and secularisms  (political and economical) and the amounts of exposure to advertising and media portraying the various virtues and vices in society in the different sample nations used though (American believers looking especially bad in this picture indicates that there are factors not brought into the equation that need to be added as variables in this kind of study).   As the author has stated: "This is not an attempt to present a definitive study that establishes cause versus effect between religiosity, secularism and societal health. It is hoped that these original correlations and results will spark future research and debate on the issue."  This is certainly an issue worthy of further investigation.  I'm keenly interested in this subject and thankful that you gave reference to a valuable source of information.

Within the same journal you've linked here is a supplimental piece
that you might find equally as interesting (here) as the 2005 statistical analysis you've linked in your post.  The Contexts of Religion and Violence takes a contextual approach toward understanding violence and religion in specific periods in history.

Re: Isn't it great that there are those out there who do so much work
I didn't see it on the page anywhere but that article looks a lot like a conventional thesis structure to me.

Isn't it great that there are those out there who do so much work
And they post it so all can see the truth of it all.  I know I couldn't put to gehter that mcuh information.  You really have to admire the people that do all the real work on the subject and allow us to be able to see it and use it to help spread the facts.

kooka_lives - I finally had a chance to read the article, it is excellent
It is extremely well researched and presented. It basically concludes with hard data, what I have thought all along; religious folks have fooled themselves into believing that everyone is better off if they believe in God  . . . even when real life observation tells us that the exact opposite is true.

kooka_lives - to a great extent, this irrational promotion of needing God

is a case of collective denial.

It's always the other guy or some small group, real or imagined, that is screwing up society. The reality that the majority of people believe in God and that this has always been so, never seems to be mentioned when the blame game is being played.

I have a question for all believers: When are you going to buck up, do a little self examination, quit lying to yourselves and become the good citizens that most atheists are?
