The Comedia del Arte was in its earliest form around 1500,
and was comprised of a group of stock characters generally in pairs: Columbina and Harlequinn, Pierrette and Pierrot, Punchinello... and I forget... (Punch and Judy shows were derived earlier, I believe, and from Pontius (Pilate) vs Judas--because all western European theater in Medieval times was only considered legitimate in the form of the Easter Passion plays.) There were the romantic sweethearts, the hapless lovers, the trickster, the villain/sap...
These characters cavorted about in loosely-scripted plays based on cliche relationship dynamics. By the mid-1500s, they were well-established as a sort of roaming soap-opera. Today, of course, they are mostly porcelain dolls in fancy dress!

ch.6
the plot thickens. though, it's likely that you explained it in earlier chapters, being uneducated in history i'm still not sure how The Players function. i've picked up that Columbina, the name itslef, is a stock character in olden plays. or at least i think. well, anyway, is it important to know, or just a sidenote? your balance of drama, with hints of humor, is definately working espcially as the story progresses and the horror aspects are established. i'll be reading ch. 7 very soon, Ciel!
