Like the ancient Greeks were supposed to have
but here is my worry - is everyone in a democracy equally committed to
collective rationality? I come from the world's largest democracy -
India - and it worries me that theoretically everyone has a vote when
not everyone has the same level of detachment from their very
immediate, personal needs and a focus on what the country requires -
which is not to say that they will then agree on what to do, but at
least then everyone is arguing for the common good. Individual
rationality often leads to collective irrationality - if we can deal
with that then there is a lot of good in a participative democracy.
