Cee is right on about the value of having a closed community:
One benefit is that if we post our stuff on a site open to the public, it is published, and we can no longer sell the first rights, should we have that opportunity.
Posting on a site not available to the general public, we are not actually publishing.
(I know I have posted this information before... and if it becomes obsolete with new laws or something, I hope someone will let me know!)

Hi and welcome to Blogit
This is good advice from Troosha; it's what got me to your site. I will add another tip, one I unfortunately have not been following myself (isn't there a saying that goes with that? Do as I say and not as I do?!!!!!!!) Ach!!
Post often and post consistently. You will have people who get used to reading your thoughts, or seeing what you're up to and soon you'll have a "fan club."
I feel very safe here I guess because it costs money to belong to this little writing group. Not just anyone can drop in on you.

Purple Mermaid had good advise. You get the most out of Blogit if there's a bit of an exchange going on. So if you cruise around and read what some other people are writing, leave a thoughful comment if you enjoyed the read, they will more than likely stop by your blog to see what you're up to.
