and i'd like to qualify your statement a little bit, stating that this sort of thinking isn't necessarily touted by the religion, but by the believers themselves.

a useful perspective on human nature.

This is a more serious problem than many would think, and is the reason why so many believers have a lack of balance and perspective in their lives, which then leads to judgemental statements and behaviors that undermine their own faith.
