Smittenheimer--may I call you Smitty? Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and great comments all along the way! I will have more for you... Meanwhile I will try to respond to your train of comments here at one time.
Padrone is "Patron" based on a concept of the relationship dynamic from Roman times, which in current days exists as the Mafia tradition. The patron has clients: the folk of lesser power who give their absolute support and access to their resources to the patron in exchange for his support of their interests. (Centralized government is totally superfluous in this system, the powerful men with their clients--family and 'friends' are essentially independent states.)
I am going to make these posts a bit shorter, and will stay with the larger size font.
On a couple of your comments, I shall just let you leer happily to yourself...
