Maj, I think that "sort of" feeling has something to do with the overall malaise of which I speak.

I am better off, sort of, but not due to the government.
Good news: I made it to twenty years with my current employer, and in five years I get my USAF retirement.
Good news: people on fixed incomes do better in periods of weak dollars. Bad news: poor job market/recession makes it hard for my offspring to work, or upgrade jobs. Alaos undercuts retirement mutual funds.
Bad news; weak housing resale market means money tied up in our house has shrunk, and the neighborhood is sprouting brown lawns under for sale signs.
Good news: I'm still kicking.
