I don't know about the Southern Baptist belief system, as I'm not southern baptist. However, I can tell you the catholic perspective.
Suicide contains two components: 1. The deliberate ending of one's own life at a person's own hand, and 2. the complete physical and emotional capacity to make the decision to end one's own life.
I'm guessing that he needs a feeding tube, and that even with the feeding tube he's very near death?
If this is the case, then #1 is really not satisfied. He's not taking his life by his own hand, his life is ending naturally. His body is dying on it's own. He's letting go to nature to take its course, and not holding onto false hope that there will be some miracle cure for getting older and dying. If by some miracle he sat up with an apetite and all his diseases cured, he'd probably change his mind. But let's be realistic, that's not going to happen. Forget those far-fetched "what-if's". It's not like he's taking a gun to his head. He's not asking for an O.D. of Morphine to end it all. THAT would be deliberate and therefore suicide.
A side-note: my sister-in-law shot and killed herself (and my mother-in-law). It was ruled a murder-suicide by law. But was it a suicide according to the church?
NO.
She was also a hard-core drug addict. She may have fulfilled #1, but she did not fulfill #2, because as an addict, she wasn't really capable of making a rational decision. Therefore she was given a Catholic burial.

You have to expect that.
It is part of the Catholic faith too, I believe.

But that is the issue, any person spouting this stuff can't possibly have given it any thought.
