I think you are going to enjoy discovering the Padrone. You are on the right track, but you will have to understand him better to understand what he wants from her.

initially, i imagined the Padrone wanted a young woman as a mistress. But i see now that he wants brave huntress. (I'm relieved, somehow. haha) Dante's inferno fit very well into the story. Also the mystery you've left unsolved is intriguing. Why Columbina? Was he attracted to her acting skill? Or was it her youth and beauty? 
On an unrelated note, Shadow of the Vampire is the film you mentioned in your last comment. It's about Max Schreck, a truly rodent-looking fellow who didn't need much make-up to look like Count Orlock. William Defoe did a great job. haha there are more pictures of Big Foot than there are of the german actor Max Screck, he was quite mysterious.
