Luz, thanks so much for this excellent feedback!
You are perceiving Turlough just the way I intended at this point. I will be interested how your view of him changes and develops. Both he and Columbina have this in common, that they are both not very likeable, and yet they are engaging.
I have this thing about history in historical novels, even fantasies: that the history should be, as much as possible, accurate. If you haven't seen it yet, the post on the Borgias is good historic background, and where they appear in my story--the Pope and Cesare, that is-- they could have been where I put them.
In fact there is an event that actually happened in August 1500 at the Papal palace that was astonishing and miraculous, which I use in the story with only a slight change in the timing. But the whole timing of the story revolves around that date and event, because it is just too good to not use!
Likewise, I was delighted to discover that Vesuvius, the volcano looming over Pompei actually did have a minor eruption that year, when I have Columbina passing through the area, and just when I needed it!
I hope you will continue to enjoy--and if not, tell me where I lost you!

Turlough is an interesting character. As an observer, I'm not sure yet if he is profoundly brave or just bitterly arrogant. (comparing oneself to God is usually taken as arrogant
). Of course, my take on him may be way off, though.
Also, your attention to the time period is exceptional. You seem to know your history and even the smallest details add to the big picture of this well-planned story. Excellent, Ciel
