first, Arabs historically have respected Jews

at issue is the perception of Arab land being taken and Arabs being displaced for the formation of the State of Israel.

During the Cold War, Israel was perceived to be a necessary Ally, as was Iran at the time.

This caused two problems:  U.S. support for Israel alienated many Arabs; U.S. support for the repressive Shah of Iran alienated further the populace of that country.

With certain apocalyptic Christians supporting the Jewish State and efforts to rebuild the Temple, we have another problem, one where our President is himself involved, seeming to be of the apocalyptic type.

What we need is a middle of the road course that will rein in the extremists on all sides, stop the Jewish settlements in the West Bank and the wall that is being built to separate Jew from Palestinian, and sponsor continued talks between Jew and Arab.

Action against Iran would be folly.  It would alienate further the Arab World, and, considering that Iran is larger than Iraq and Afghanistan combined, more than double the theater of military action and take it into a more mountainous region where it would be harder to fight.

Our troop strength is at its limit now.  If we need more, we would have to reinstate the Draft.
