I have never found the need for a spiritial side.
My family and friends are great and they are what pull me through the tough times. And most of them are not spiritial either.
I would be more than willing to read the essay, buy I will bet you anything I will find it to have flawed reasoning.

In light of the content of your post, you might like to read Jean Sarte's book -
No Exit which is an essay on not having a religion, and thereby providing life at its most difficult times with no exit!
