Every link used here tells the same story. And this is not just pulling items out of the air -- it's using actual quotes and relating actual events.
Wouldn't matter where you'd go for the information, the story would still be the same.

Question: Why didn't you research this any further than Wikipedia?
As for me, I'd have loved to have been in on the meetings between Bono and Senator Helms. Talk about the odd couple . . .

yep maybe the republicans will bring back slavery -- they've already virtually done away with workers' benefits and fair wages and medical benefits, etc. brought us back to sweatshops and low wages and unsafe working conditions, etc. just like the 19th Century

like it's something we should be ashamed of. It's the current crowd of criminals who have been running this country for almost 8 years that we should be ashamed of. Jesse Helms just represented what we can all hope is the last of a dying breed.

First of all, Wickpedia is not a "source" for anything.
Wickpedia (click of article on misinformation) is written and freely edited by laymen. If there is no opposition or information to the contrary, it stays as is, and MANY times the information is just wrong. Even when the information is correct, it can, and has been, edited by anyone.
Secondly, I don't agree with everything Helms, but if I am going to find what you write about him credible, I will need for you to be more honest in you fact-finding. You wrote that he was opposed to funding for AIDS research... are you sure about that?
He was an advocate of greater federal funding to fight AIDS in Africa and elsewhere overseas, and in doing so, struck up an enduring and unlikely friendship with U2 frontman Bono.
Since they were introduced several years ago, the Republican Helms and Bono have become close allies in the fight against the AIDS epidemic in Africa.
As for busing and affirmative action ... the majority of African Americans were against both. Busing took them out of their comfort zone and forced them into a hostile environment of narrow minded whites, and affirmative action was, to many that I talked to, like winning by cheating. They wanted to win the job based on ability, experience, and education. I'll admit that these were probably not Helms' reasons for opposing both issues, but the bottom line is, he was, inadvertently, on the right side.
Yes, he was a racist and he hated gays - but he was right upfront about it ... the scary politicians are the closet racists, at least we knew how he really felt and no man is an island - how many terms was he elected to?
