On the 4th, we sat back on the front porch and watched a fabulous fireworks display across on the U.S. side of the river.  Between the 'oohs' and 'aahs' we worried about our families as well.

Pat_B, like you, I have such mixed emotions about our young people in the service of our country.  I am so proud of them and I am so afraid for their well being.  I am very patriotic, yet I hate war.  May your grandson be safe and well and return to you.

Pat

Hope you had a pleasant day anyway, in spite of the problematic associations. It strikes me that Americans celebrate the Fourth so much more intensely that we do the First, Canada Day. I guess we are a bit of a 'low key' country, lol.

We did go to watch some fireworks that night, though, and thoroughly enjoyed them. And during the day we went to the zoo, of all places! Actually, if one must have zoos (and I'm somewhat ambivalent about that, but that's a whole new debate) the Toronto Zoo is an example of how to do it right...

And all the best to your grandson...

I love the concept of the 4th of July

I've always admired American's and their devotion to their country. They're practically giddy on the 4th, and it's always made me smile.

But I'm sorry to hear that it's not all fun and games for you--and I'm especially saddened to hear the news about your grandson! My thoughts and prayers are with you and him, and I hope all those brave men can come home to stay, sooner rather than later!

Wow Pat...lots of emotions for you right now...
....you certainly have a lot tied to these days.  Godspeed your grandson back safely...I find it horrendously sad that those kids are over there...it has to end.
