Islam for France council

I thought this was an interesting New York Times story on the French Government's successful creation of an official Islam for France council that will represent Muslims in France:

Last month, under pressure from law-and-order Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, the center-right government hammered out a landmark agreement with France's unwieldy and diverse community of five million Muslims that created a national, elected council to represent it.

...The goal is to create a workable body like ones that exist for Catholics, Jews and Protestants that the government can talk to on issues like education, dress, work, the administration of the more than 1,500 mosques and prayer houses in France, even terrorism.
