I buy from the orchard shacks ~ but, I'm still 'scared' of the tomatoes for now.  I did cook up some fried green tomatoes while my son and hubby were here, but, yes, no... I haven't had an 'maters.  Please, show pix of your son's when you get them.  ~ (I infact, have a fear of the spinach yet...)  ~ Elyse

Re:That is certainly true, Dearest Taps.

I remember my father enjoying the tomatoes right from the garden and him making a tomato sandwich.  He'd sprinkle on the salt and enjoy!

Precious memories is what life is all about.

A good wash and rinse under the cold water tap or peel them!

I love tomatoes but I am getting to believe that we need to be very careful of everything that goes in our mouth these days.

Hope you get those ripe tomatoes soon.

KaBooM, I'm afraid that such food problems just might get worse before they get better.

Purple_Mermaid, Just think, there was a time when people thought that tomatoes were poisonous and were afraid to eat them..  They called them "love apples".   Maybe back then they had trouble with salmonella too and just didn't know it.

TAPS,
I am eating fresh raw tomatoes here in Japan, but we have other scares to worry about, pesticides in dumplings from china then a general boycott of chinese prepared and grown foods, then Japan mis-labeling Chinese grown vegetables as Japanese grown.  All kinds of corruption here and there.  Having son's tomatoes to look forward to is nice!  BLO sandwich, I love it!  Must give it a try

NiteTide, I'm glad you don't have what Ariala called "the Victorian squirts".  LOL  HAHAHA

Re: I just heard at work today...
Cheugon, I think they are saying that it juust might be the tainted water used in the process of growing them and getting them ready for market.  It was said that a lot of them use water tainted with animal or human waste.  Yuck!!!!

Re: have you tried ketchup in place of the tomato?
shellyb, What a really disgusting suggestion.   The only thing I use ketchup for is a goodly dollop when I'm making baked beans or my own BBQ sauce.   You can come up with something better than that.  LOL

I think you may be right, Nautikos.   I wash everything in a warm soapy water bath with a little brush and then rinse in cold water.  It doesn't seem to hurt them a bit.

Ariala, I'm sure you must wash them really, really well.

Re: I Never Quit
editormum, fresh tomato salsa is a true delite.  I often eat it just as a side dish or a bowl of cold soup.   Just you wait til the garden ones ripen, just you wait.   Mmmmmmm

Whacky, don't let the squirrels get them.

Jacenta, having to wait for them will make them twice as good when they are ready.

lustorlove, fresh fruits and veggies are my favorite foods.  There is such an assortment of them to choose from, that when there seems to be a problem with one kind, I just leave that one alone for the duration and substitute some other fresh food.  I really hated it when the fresh spinach was tainted with ecoli, but I used something else for my salads and made spinach cassaroles.  I will be very glad when son's garden tomatoes are really bearing enough that I can have my tomato sandwiches.  LOL   They say that the problem is caused by tainted water used with/on the growing veggies.

some one pointed that out to me the other day, its strange how fresh fruits an veggies could cause so much trouble

TAPS.
Hubby and I avoid eating fresh tomatoes, but we miss our sliced tomatoes.  Our neighbor gave us 3 healthy tomato plants recently and I planted them, but we have a long wait ahead of us before they bare fruit.  Your BLO sandwich sounds good.

I Never Quit
My favourite food is the tomato, and this time of year, my favourite thing is my fresh tomato salsa. I posted the recipe for it in my low-carb blog quite some time back. I've been munching me some salsa for weeks now (made fresh every third day), using all kinds of tomatoes. What I'm loving right now are the way cool heirloom tomatoes that Fresh Market and Wild Oats have. They make some seriously tasty salsa. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

TAPS.........................

My husband has bought tomatoes several times from a local produce stand.  The man says they come from Georgia.  Well, we ate them and we're still kicking.  I know about the scare and I don't buy them in the store (too expensive, $2.89 a pound).   I'm sure your sandwich was delicious, TAPS, but I just can't go around telling people I had a BLO for lunch, BLT sounds much better.  hahahahaha  You funny lady!

I'll be very careful which tomatoes I eat and I will wash them well, I always do.   Hope  you soon have your ripe tomatoes.

TAPS
I eat raw tomatoes in several of my favorite salads all the time! They belong there, and wouldn't be the same without them! BUT I WASH MY TOMATOES FIRST! THOUROUGHLY! Salmonella cannot stand a good scrub! And if people followed that rule religiously, there would be no problems with tomatoes...

I do to, cheugon.  I could eat those all day long.

I just heard at work today...
...that it wasn't the tomatoes that were causing the salmonella....that the FDA got it wrong.
But, damn if I didn't forget what he said the cause of it was!
BLT's are great, but, I also like a regular tomato sandwich, on white or wheat, with mayonnaise, salt and pepper....Mmmmm!!!

dammit......I DID not know that.....and I've been eating tomatoes for the past week now.....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.  I should be thankful I'm still blogging.  LOL.  Thanks for the great post!!

Sam, I think God has a great sense of humor and I think he was laughing his head off while I was cleaning up that disgusting mess.   I was thinking I heard him say, "You've been lazy playing up that silly little accident you had on the treadmill and using it for an excuse to sit around on your fat rump.  Now you've got some exercise to do.  See how much I love you by seeing that you keep busy and strong.  HAHAHAHA"

Nothing has happen yet, so don't get an urge to have a BLT. You have read the message! I am still freaking out about your encounter. I think I shall have it with me for the rest of my days. I am so sorry it happened to you but I am glad I was part of the happening! lol Love to you Taps. sam
