One advantage of poverty, TAPS
small, intimate birthday dinners for 2 or 4 with our children, candles (one in center of the table) and good cheer! My daughter went to the Hermann's Wine Trail for Octoberfest last year and they will probably go again this year. She's begging us to go sometime. That's the DISadvantage of poverty.....

Nautikos, there are four wineries within just a few miles from that pretty bed and breakfast with tours and wine tasting and since it is an old German town, the village is just full of good biergartens and in the fall they have wonderful Oktoberfest celebrations.

Funny, sometimes I like big parties and sometimes I don't. In part it has to do with who's at these parties, I guess, but it also just depends on my mood of the moment.
That place you're describing sounds great, and I'm very surprised to hear that there's 'wine country' in Missouri! Goes to show you what I know, lol. The view from that balcony is fantastic!

I hate big parties and I especially dislike “surprises”. For me, if a few dear friends are around and there’s a bottle of wine (or two) I’m happy although over the past couple of years Mr. T and I have simply gone out for a lovely dinner. I enjoy our candle light dinners at a posh restaurant.

Great idea, TAPS! of course warm chocolate cookies are a good idea
any time. Fun photo -- they all look like they could tell a great story! As for the humiliation of having the food service crew bang pots and sing and make the b'day girl the focus of stares, I'd rather not. :)pat

I am not for public birthdays either. Now that cookie business would simply cause me, even at this late date in the scheme of things, to possibly have two birthdays a year. Lovely idea.

You had me at "warm cookies with Port Chocolate Raspberry Sauce and ice cream
." I'm completely hooked now, and dead determined to visit that place someday. How utterly delightful-sounding!!!! ...Okay, I'm over the drooling....

Onto the real comment: I agree with you about birthdays. I'm not much of a socialite and was never into huge parties. I always enjoyed a quiet evening with loved ones...and no chaos (Hey, I could ask that for ONE day of my life, can't I?)

I'm not a fan of big to-do's for birthdays. Your comment about Barak Obama look alikes made me LOL. A birthday at a vineyard would be maginficent and romantic.
