"Normal" ...
...is the incorrect word to use when referring to temperature variations.
"Average" is the proper word, upon which the "normals" are based.
And I'm sure you know that "average"....when applied to any measurment....is the mean between the extremes.
And it is inadvisable to make long-term predictions based on temporary phenomena....no matter how many charts you break-out.
And in the world of climatology, even a hundred-years can be "temporary."
There is nothing abnormal about temperature extremes.
We've had them since the dawn of time.
Ever heard of the Ice Age? Not exactly caused by human agency!
Ever since weather has been recorded, there have been temperature cycles that have done violence to the averages, or, as you would say the 'normals."
The problem I have with the word "normal" when applied to climatology, is that it conjures up images of disaster by virtue of the word itself and it's opposite...."abnormal."
Which works to the advantage of those with something to gain by such fear-mongering.
I'm not suggesting that humanity should tempt fate by being environmentally irresponsible, but, let's not jump the proverbial gun either.
And emotionally laden words, such as normal and abnormal, have no place in objective scientific discussion, unless it's a Social Science.

Thank you, Xenox, for proving my point about the cool spring!

August '07-January '08 - more states warmer than normal as opposed to cooler than normal.

February '08 - about half and half, with much colder than normal in the upper midwest.

March '08 - near normal to cooler than normal is dominant.

April '08 - cooler than normal for almost everything west of the Mississippi and north of Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, including much cooler than normal in Kansas, Nebraska and the Pacific Northwest. Parts of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and the New England states, and most of New York, is "much above normal." Other "above normal" in the northeastern states, central Atlantic coast, southern Texas and the Colorado River basin.

May '08 - cooler than normal across most of the northeastern third of the country, the upper midwest, the central Rockies and the Great Basin, with only parts of Florida, Texas and the West Coast and a handful of scattered areas showing anything above normal - and nothing "much above normal."

So where is the "global" warming, if there is so much cooling going on?
