It defies logic...
My son's hands are always covered in notes he writes on them! By the way, the NOW is the National Organization for Women, a women't rights group, very femeninist and probably prone to not shaving their legs. Its a standard reference here, maybe not true, but then a lot of humor is based on stereotypes.
