Well, yes and no, lol. If people were not being bombarded with advertising, they still wouldn't begin to discuss "fundamental societal and long-term needs", whatever those might be. And anyway, the whole thing is far more complex to be dealt with in a few catchy phrases. To the back of the class, Sut...

How about the ones they show late at night?

You sit there and watch not really wide awake but not asleep either--If the phone was closer to my easy chair..uh oh.

Taps, one of the best courses I ever took in college was how to watch commercials with a critical eye.  Now, they are just fodder for parody and ridicule - my kids and I make up "between the lines" dialogue whenever we see any particularly ridiculous spots!  Thanks for the great post.

Even more insidious are the messages between the lines...
that demonstrate and reinforce appalling value assumptions about relatonships between, among and within men and women, families, kids and their peers, everyone and the world...  They tell us that kids are in charge, that all beauty is in youth, that the outside is more important than the inside...  etc, etc, etc,

TAPS you are so right!
I hate commercials as they promise dreams that are unrealistic. They encourage people to buy what they don't need. They encourage greed.

I think that absolute worst commercials are those that promise instant beauty – a thin body in a week, wrinkles-be-gone, or pimples miraculously disappearing after applying some over priced magical cream.  They prey on the lonely; people who think their loneliness is a result of their outward image.

Keeping up with the Joneses has always been an expensive
and fruitless proposition. Whose house has the most elaborate Christmas light display?  That competitive impulse alone wastes a lot of electricity. And look where the notion of driving the newest, biggest, most impressive vehicle gets us. Very thought-provoking blog. :)pat

Consumption...
...breeds the need for more consumption, because it has never....nor will ever, deliver on it's promises.
Consumerism ignores....and distracts from....what the human soul truly needs....love, communion, peace, purpose and more love.
Great post, TAPS....as always.

This is so true. I am so sick of stuff. We pared down so much when we moved here, that was more than 20 years ago now every nook and cranny is full. I need a yard sale! Be blessed. I have always known that money, things etc., did not equal happiness. Thank God.

OOPS, hit the wrong button. hahahaha let me finish!

Sometimes I wonder if it's because I never had anything as a kid (remember my mom had 13 of us) and through the years have fallen prey to buying things I never needed in the first place.  The same holds true with listening to BS and getting taken in by that too.  We kinda raised ourselves.  At any rate, I'm all grown up now and know better.  hahaha

So good to read you again.  Doc says my lung has healed, but the heavy doses of steroids have burned/inflammed my esophagus and he has me taking an antibiotic to heal that.  I'm still on the steroids, but a much lower dose.  I'm getting better. Maggie  (hey, did I already tell you this?  Oh well, ya heard it again.)

TAPS, I believe sam is right..........................
I have so much I don't need, and never did.  Now, I've got to have a yard sale and unload it - hopefully not to get more.  hahaha  You said it all, TAPS, I do not get taken in on phone calls (I hang up on them) and I don't buy anything I know I'll never use.  Sometimes I wonder

If I were
Prime Minister for a day I would outlaw commercial advertising completely. This would massively reduce inflationary pressures, and thereby allow for increased spending on social and environmental programmes.

I think if we held off, we would discover we didn't need the things that trigger our impulses and happiness is found in things natural.  sam
