Congratulations. It is a good building block for success. It will be one to site because he will always know the effort he had to put in to earn the valued prize. When he gets to Boy Scouts there is a carving merit badge. It might be something to consider so that he can understand the positive things that can be done with a knife. Who knows what could blossom from there. I admire the way you are dealing with the responsibility of owning a knife. sam

well I got my first Bowie Knife
around his age.
wasn't full -- sized -- but it was a pretty good knife. Used it a lot.

isn't that how it is with kids? I think you've got a good head start with him---finding something he's passionate about and encouraging him to stick to it until he gets the result he's after.
