bluehands---it's true, parents need to be responsible.  Alarmist isn't necessary, though.

well i have not read that particular bbook but words and images carry weight. those images and meaning are unique to different cultures. even color is subjective....in that light when we publish something especially a children's book we are responsible for what we write because it will have influence. so first and foremost as a grown up you have to question what you read, and as a parent you must either read with your children to answer questions or sensor what books you buy for them. i do not believe in book burning unless it is to drive home a powerful point, and i do not believe we should ban books from libraries and schools but i do believe in parental censorship and parental guidance.

Re: I love pengins!
sira---that is so true.  It's just another example how sorely education is lacking among certain groups of people.

I love pengins!

I'm ordering a copy of the book right now!

And just for the record, anyone who's bothered to watch March of the Penguins (my favorite movie!), will tell you that the males are the ones who sit on the eggs for the better part of the birthing process, while the lady penguins go out to fish. And according to Mr. Morgan Freeman, none of those Papa Penguins showed signs of playing for the "other team"...

People shouldn't be allowed to post comments or reviews until they've taken some sort of "common sense aptitude test"! If you're too dumb, you don't get to talk...

Re: i feel like buying two copies, one for each granddaughter for when they
callista---now that's scary, isn't it?  It reminds me of a story---a good friend of mine was a missionary for many years in S. America--he said at the zoo in brazil they had cows.  COWS AT THE ZOO.  And the children there never saw cows before.

i feel like buying two copies, one for each granddaughter for when they
have babies, there's a possibility there will no penguins left by then.

Re: Buy it for friends about to be parents...I like your approach...
Straightforward--you got that right!  I mean, Dr. Seuss et. al. is great, but lets get people reading more than just a narrow list of books.  I personally think it's better to encourage a wide range of interests.

Re: FineYoungSinger,
Glennb, I know what you're saying--and after actually reading the book this weekend, it really is about animal behavior.  The homosexual overtones are completely read in by the adult.  There is one line where the zookeeper says, "They must be in love".  What does a kid do when you say this?  They giggle, right?  If you do read this book, the homosexual theme will be there if you really want it to be; but so will the opportunity to teach children about animal behavior.

Buy it for friends about to be parents...I like your approach...
indeed why must we always give the run of the mill books always?

FineYoungSinger,
It sounds like a great read! A snapshot of nature in captivity. It is mankind who thinks we cannnot reverse our "established" roles without being a "freak" (not meant to be homophobic)! Thanks for sharing.

I'm wondering....must be a good book, and maybe some are just jealous they didn't think of it first!!!  You can NEVER please 100% of anyone or anything!!!!

People will always find something wrong. It has to be good it is stirring readers. What more could an author hope for!  sam

Re:
Mal...I know---and I'm sure children all across the country are totally preoccupied by the sexual orientation of puppets---NOT.  It's just one more thing for the "moral" "majority" to whine about.

OTA---Thanks for reading!  yeah, but just like anything else, something only has power over us if we grant it ourselves.

Next, those cookoo homophobes will be saying that Bert and Ernie are gay....oh, right, they've already outed them!  I love penguins-  they are always ready for a fomal event regardless of their sexual orientation.

Ah, the everyday theater of the absurd.
Like the government, only adults could possibly take something simple, straightforward, innocent, even problem solving, and turn it into a hopelessly mangled, idiotic mess.

There's nothing better to boost the sales of a book then banning it.

Re:
I wouldn't either...look at the curiosity it could spark!  It opens up an avenue to teach children about animal behavior.  Its the adults putting sexuality into it.

good post about a timely subject matter.........i find it hard to believe that this kind of criticism actually exists over such a sweet book........i'd have no problem reading it to a small child.
