The common cold makes us uncommonly ill. I think the worst of it,
symptoms aside, is how it distances us from the immediate. We're swathed in some kind of invisible insulation that sights and sounds filter through. Everything that might usually touch us, make us smile or want to weep, becomes an irritating distraction to our focus on the misery. Maybe it's just me.
