Kabu, I envy your ability to be an onlooker. It pretty much sucks to be an American having this choice ahead of us. You might have a couple of "defectors" on your doorstep if the election doesn't go the way my Eddie Ray and I hope.....

FineYoungSinger,
You said it well! Wearing that pin has become a symbol and crutch for American insensitivity and arrogance. Wear the pin and we can overlook your criminal conduct. The things are made in China anyway! What does that say about your patriotism America?

OTA--thanks for reading.
What you say here is pretty much exactly what Obama was saying. Wearing a flag pin doesn't necessarily make you a patriot, and not wearing one doesn't not make you a patriot.
I believe this non-issue has one purpose, and that's to destract people from real issues. And judging from the reaction of my waitress, it's clearly working.

The Flag
I have to admit that I have mixed feelings on this. Certainly the economy, the war, education and a whole grocery list of problems continue to plague our country. I am a firm believer that our actions should speak for our truth. Politicians who wear the pin and collect our votes should be ashamed if they don't follow through with right actions.
Having said that, I like to see our flag. I am proud to be an American. My grandfather wore one often. He was a justice of the peace in a small Texas town. He loved the people in his town and was a WW2 vet. It doesn't have to mean that someone is just trying to pretend to be patriotic when they wear the flag lapel pin.
~Peace, OTA
