Lighten up and don't take this too seriously or see it as inhumane
Everybody and their descendants who forced other people off their land by means of weapons or deceit are "illegal" immigrants from the "humane" perspective.  Seriously though this reminds me of a Brit who asked a Pakistani woman what she was doing in the UK.  Her reply:  You Brits came to Pakistan first.

Re: Re: Re: zenmom
Typo there  of human for humane, sorry. But my point remains, I never said something was inhumane, I said a solution could be humane.

Ummm.......you must be tired. That is not a quote from anything that I wrote

Re: Re: zenmom

You write: "But this problem can be solved, humanely and decently,"

I must be tired, because....this looks like a derivative of HUMANE, not HUMAN to me.

Re: Re: HALFELVEN
Insulting you was not my intent by any means. If you took it that way, my apologies.

Re: Re: zenmom
I was once asked to leave a gathering and refused. The police were called and I was "removed forcibly".........I did not think it was inhumane at all........kind of expected it

Re: zenmom
Someone else made a point about that but I'd like to point out that again, you're questioning something I did not say. Go back and look. I said I'm sure there is a human solution. I didn't say anything being done right now is not humane.

But since you asked, separating families arbitrarily because of paperwork could certainly be inhumane in some cases.

Re: HALFELVEN
Never said you weren't entitled to your opinion, that's another strawman. And you seem to be the one taking things seriously, so that's called a red herring.

As for the quote, that doesn't seem to be what's being discussed. Besides, arguing by appeal to unnamed authority is just more rhetoric.

Oh, and the "Are you nuts?" bit at the end of your original post is called an "ad hominem" attack. So telling me to lighten up after attempting to insult me counts as another one.

These are all rhetorical techniques for using emotion instead of logic and facts for deciding public debates.

I respect your opinion. I do think you need to refine how you present it if you really expect to change anyone's mind.

I don't think completely open borders are the answer but neither is the emotion-laden response I'm seeing from some people.

Re: zenmom

Imagine what it is like to be deported forcibly, if you can. Nothing "humane" about it. I don't pretend to have solutions but, one think I'm certain of............fencing 'em out ain't gonna do it. We've got some smart people in this country (not in Washington)......let's "think tank" it out.

I'm curious as to what you think is being done that in not "humane"

Re: HALFELVEN
Tatt.......And, halfelven is entitled to her opinion.......you might want to try respecting her opinion and not just tell her to "lighten up". This is MY (and many others) opinion!

Re: Questions...
I support your opinion halfelven. This problem can and should be solved "humanely".  Agreed. Agreed....The analogy of burglary is OUTRAGEOUS.

HALFELVEN
This is my (and many others) opinion and therefore I am entitled to it. You should lighten up a bit and not take things so seriously. A great man once said "A country without borders is no country at all"

Questions...
1. "Certain people (mainly those that are here illegally) -- is that your belief?" Because it certainly is not an established fact. Lots of people, millions of Americans resist the attempt to characterize the immigrant problem as you have done.

2. Your analogy with burglary is just wrong. No one is coming into your house and doing these things. They are being PAID to do them by other Americans for other Americans. Many of them paid by the very corporations that manipulate public policy.

3. You're arguing with strawmen in defining the position of people who disagree with you so you can easily defeat arguments no one is making.

4. I live in a part of the country that has been Spanish speaking for a century longer than it has been English speaking. I speak two languages besides English, not well but enough to get by. Not everyone in America, including natural born citizens, is a language chauvinist. That said, most immigrants do their best to learn English as quickly as they can. Your complaint sounds like masked xenophobia to me.

5. Am I nuts? No. I'm an educated woman, a descendant of Cherokees and a military veteran, with a view of a national problem that cannot be solved by sloganeering.

Building a wall around America isn't going to do anything except make some contractors wealthy. But this problem can be solved, humanely and decently, if people have the will to talk about it rather than look for scapegoats.

Great anaqlogy
I like the part about the Illegals doing the work that I won't do...but wait a minute, there isn't anything I won't do...almost. It's a tough call for if I were starving and looking through the chain link fence at streets of gold I might want to cross over too.

The illegals have a voice as well and the candidates are worried about votes. Wussies!!!

You're absolutely right, Tattered!
But why is it taking Americans so long to wake up to this situation, which has been going on for decades? And why are the current presidential candidates not being forced to address this issue?

posted by Nautikos on April 9, 2008 at 6:07 PM | link to this | reply

Exactly!
Would other Countries allow us to do to them, what they're doing to us? It's a double-standard....like our trade agreements. Excellent post.
