Sorry, but the Olympic aspirations of athletes are much less important than the fate of oppressed peoples. Athletes, worldwide, and their national associations should combine to get rid of the IOC and replace it, "totus porcus", with a credible and accountable ruling body. Losing out on the China Olympics may just force them to get off their collective backsides and do that.

While I agree that The Games may be used to put pressure on China, I do not subscribe to the boycott. Some athletes will never get the opportunity again to strut their stuff. We should not deny them that. For some athletes their performance portends what happens to them and their families forever. Let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Boycotting the Olympc Games
I tend to agree that the games should be boycotted. What I don't understand is why the Chinese wanted them in the first place (a question I just asked on Earthbeat's Eclectic Wanderings), because Tibet was almost guaranteed to be an issue -- as was the high level of air pollution in Beijing. It seems that the Chinese had more to lose than to gain from get-go.
