You're not the first person not from the United States I've heard that from. It's worse on the east coast than the west coast. Far worse. When I was at Bestbuy this last weekend, I stood two feet from three associates who talked about whatever without ackowledging me.

What you say doesn't only apply to BestBuy. Since I came to America I have found out that more shop assistants than not are prone to ignore you, commission or not. It's a pity and has resulted in my going shopping only if I really must. Fun shopping I do in Europe.
