Re: Really?

Sira, let me just say that you have guts making this statement.  Bravo, and I agree, I think this is very bad for the overall identity of our neighbors to the North.

I also feel that there's something more sinister going on here: how is this agreement constitutional?  This group has a degree of autonomy.  To whom do they answer?  And exactly which American values is this agreement going to uphold---the values which squelch freedom and insight fear?  I don't think so.

I've been reading some very interesting materials of late, and as I complete each piece, I'll be blogging about it here.  Thanks for reading, Sira.

Really?

Okay, now I can see how we, as Canadian's would think this sounds like a great plan. Joining forces with the States is a blessing, right? Our Canadian Military isn't exactly known for it's great prowess after all--makes sense to link ourselves with the more powerful Nation to the south.

But what is America gaining from this? We can send you a couple of helicopters or tanks, assuming they're not tied up in a museum exhibit. And we're always ready with a cup of Tim Horton's coffee, and a friendly smile. But it seems to me that Canada is getting the bigger end of the stick here. We don't have to pull your butts out of the fire--we're doing good to keep our own butts from burning.

That being said, I'm not sure I want Canadian and American cultures/countries/militaries getting any closer than they already are. As it is, most foreigners think of Canada as a 'mini-america', the weaker (albeit much friendlier) brother of the United States. Is this joining of forces taking us one step closer to being swallowed up entirely by the American Way?  Nothing against my neighbors to the south, but I sure hope not.
