Contradictions to ponder!
Where I live, live clowns didn't start entertaining at parties until around the 1980's. Although, there have always been clowns at parties. Until then, the only clowns were at circuses. You're so right. For instance; they didn't make Santa Clauses as punching bags. I did have an inflatable Easter Bunny that I practiced my boxing skills on, even though it wasn't made for that. An enigma for the ages.

I always thought clowns were kind of creepy......
The shrink just told my other half to talk to a pillow, and to punch it if he felt like it, but to do this once a day, all by himself, for a month. It's a theory called "displacement therapy" (I think) for his anxiety. Funny thing, I just started the latest Stephen King book, the the main character has the same instructions as part of anger management therapy. So maybe it was good therapy for us! I loved Cunni's take on the whole subject.
FANTASTIC POST!

Interesting question
Maybe because they were the ones that took the pratfalls and never seemed to get hurt. Plus, there were no political correctness squads fining you for insensitivity to clowns.

We are annoyed by happy people if we're unhappy.
Hey, I might not have the answer, but I'll give you one anyway :-)
The whole deal with clowns is that they are lovable losers, who trip over their own feet and get carried away with the lipstick. We like to see others humiliate themselves, especially if they do so for our amusement. Similar to why everybody likes to see somebody get hit in the nuts on funniest home videos.
The guy with the goofy grin is aggravating and obnoxious, because we don't feel like smiling, so why should he? Makes me want to punch him. Get him up quick so I can punch 'em again.
