Here are some really great opening lines...

When I Wasn't Looking/ When did you go away, my love? - So I keep reading... and reading... till the bitter end. You can feel the pain - sharp... and yet, softened... because you could put it in such beautiful words...

Re: how did it happen
gapcohen, Interesting that you mentioned AD.  At the time that I wrote this, part of the problem I was having with hubby was intertwined with having to spend so much time with my mom and dad to help her take care of him.  He was very active physically but had regressed with AD to the point that he did not even know who she was, or where he was, or what anything was, or how to do anything, and had to have 24/7 caretaker.

how did it happen
this was so beautiful - and I read it as a woman lamenting her husband's dementia/Alzheimers, as we're going through that with my husband's father.  By the way, I have a Stone (Norman) in my family, too.

Re: Such a huge cry from your very Soul TAPS! I recognise the 'FEEL'-if not for
Even though it is not something on which I dwell anymore, the feel returns when the subject arises or when I see him at family functions such as the funeral I attended in FL before Christmas.

It is, Troosha.  And when one is in that situation, it seems to go on forever, as if there is and will never be an ending or a solution to the problem.

Taps
I know that feeling - the emptiness of someone present yet emotionally absent.  It's a terrible space to be in.

Sinome-
I was about to say the same thing to TAPS.  She does have a way with words, eh?

TAPS - you were married for quite a long time, too, weren't you?  I wonder how many relationships run a long time on the fuel of young love, once red hot, and easily fed more coal, just to run out of steam the further you get on down the line?  Without restoking the fires, even the embers can expire and grow cold. Or if they are doused with cold water like what happened to you, can they ever be relit?

Sometimes I think that's what happened to Jay & I,  and when the embers that were US stopped radiating 'love-heat,' then I doused them with water just to get it over with.  I wonder sometimes if the old fire we keep trying to relight is 'sputtering' still from the water I threw and how long does it take for coals to dry enough to burn again, or if they will ever burn as hot, and even if there will be enough coals we can afford, left to start up a fire again.....we DID just threw some logs on the fire at your direction a few days ago,,,, (tee-hee) -- food for thought..... we do have Gluten Free (GF) weenies made of free range, gently killed poultry from Whole Foods, with GF condiments of mustard and catsup and GF buns to heat over the logs at least when we've camped our old wagon on the plateau. We ARE striving to eat healthier, become less fluffy and live without allergens, additives. growth hormones, and antibiotics, as well as  GA Free Foods.

What a beautiful poem, Oh my G-d Taps, You have no idea how close you have come to my heart with that poem.  I want your permission to give it to my kids, it so expresses what I have been going through with their dad,  Thank you so much for giving voice to my secret pain.  I am sorry you had to go through that
