Hey Sira, I think Canada actually has a better grip on caring for the homeless than America. In most major cities, the hospitals have been closing the Mental illness facilities (thanks to our lovely insurance companies who really control the medical scene: OVERTURN McCLELLAN FURGESON!), so over the last year or so there has been a marked increase of homelessness. Many are mentally ill, should be in a hospital on medication, but aren't. Now they're on the streets. It's as if they're conducting some sick form of "natural selection"--if you can overcome, so be it, otherwise die on the street like an animal????

It's disgusting.

Calgary has it's fair share of homeless people, and boy do they have a tough time in the winters (especially when the temperature drops into the -40's!). There never seems to be enough room in the shelters. The already over-taxed hospitals can't handle the number of bedraggled people staggering through their doors, seeking warmth and medical attention.

We have job placement agencies that specialize in homelessness. We've got a program that gets people out of the shelters, provides them with low-to-no income housing, and gives them a good shot at getting back on their feet. But even still, the homelessness rates are on the rise.

We could use a bit of your crit...pardon me, consulting expertise here!

Kabu, thanks for reading! Yes, I have a million ideas. I'm going to have to blog more about the homeless in DC. It was pretty intense.

Glad you are back. Maybe you should go on regular odysseys to various cities, make assessments and report your suggestions for improvement to the mayors of the cities. You know, a consultant of sorts.
