I must try that website, Sira, but if you don't mind, I won't introduce your missile throwing methods to Ell.

If Ell needs help with her aim

I'll gladly offer some advise. Not that I'm taking sides or anything, of course. But I'll admit (and Mark can attest to this), I've finally gotten the knack of nailing him--usually in the head--with various objects, from across the room, at any given time. It's an art.

Have you ever visited the CommonTies website? They pay $100 to $200 per article, depending on length. I've never submitted anything, but I've heard more than one person talk about them, and all had positive things to say. Maybe worth a peek?

Not only humourless, but they don't take any op-ed pieces either - as it takes about 7 days for them to post the article it would be out of date.

Thank you very much for that information, ginnie.  All that the new me needs to do now is get off his ass and work at it.  I'll keep you posted.  Associated Content don't take any articles from outside the US, either.  Guess who has a daughter in the US?

$4! Geesh!!
I tried them..or one like them...several years ago and they didn't want me...even for $4!  Doesn't do much for the old self esteem!    And if they are humourless...blech!

Hi Jill!...errr John!

I do send the same article to different magazines and the best place I found for finding the mags and what they are looking for is by subscribing to www.writersmarket.com and I also subscribe online to www.worldwidefreelance.com

I tried Chatelaine once but it does seem to have mostly ads. I keep thinking I'll try Canadian mags and give my daughter's address...they won't take my submissions cuz I'm not living in Canada...even though I'm Canadian..boohoo!  Good luck Jill!

I love the 'little love-shack' description, Pat.   It must have been a little love shack for the sparrows as well with a cosy open drier vent.  Frozen Fluff doesn't bring up images of whipped topping for me; it's more of a cold mistress, or ballerina with frozen tutu.

Thanks ginnieb;I appreciate that.  I wouldn't advise writing for them, not at $4 to $6 a time.   And they don't pay for humour???   They want articles that inform and teach.  They taught me not to post articles with them, but I must admit that now and then I can't resist and send something off to them.  I think I'll start a WA group - oh I forgot, that's what Blogit is - Writers Anonymous.

I only sent to one magazine, ginnie.   I'll have to Google for other magazines.  Do you mean you send the same article to a dozen different mags?  What I have noticed is that most magazines are for women, and sometimes when I read them (for research purposes only) I see articles in my style, but they are all written by women, and I don't think one written from a male point of view has a hope in hell.

One magazine that comes in, (Ell subscribed to 'Our Canada' and she got a three mag deal) is chatelaine, and as far as I can see it is a magazine of advertisements.   Just had a thought - a profound thought - perhaps it is time for Jill MacNab to be resurrected?

I had a no-louvre vent at my little love shack on 15th Avenue.
I was surprised to look out the window over the kitchen sink and see a couple sparrows busily hauling twigs and materials to nest in the opening. Which finally got me busy on the job of blocking the varmints. Never saw frozen fluff, though. Frozen fluff: sounds like some kind of whipped topping for your pudding...

Wow..they are great!  Not that I'm surprised!!

Way to go Mac!
Sometimes it takes ages to hear from them!  Did you just send to one magazine?  I usually blitz it and send to a dozen at a time.  It's so great to hear you sent some off!!

Blush!  I don't think you'll ever see an Ell blog, ginnie.   She is the practical one and works on her web site, which keeps us afloat.  She thinks blogging is a waste of time, and she could be write - I liked that pun -  I should be making money with this keyboard.

I've taken your advice and sent off two articles to a seniors mag, but no dice so far.

Thank you TAPS.  A slight embellishment here and there is what keeps me sane - if I am.

Louvres!  That's the word I was looking for, majroj.  Thank you.  Yeuch.  We had an incident like that a few weeks back when a mouse trap was triggered and fell off the shelf.  There was no mouse but Samantha had a smile on her face and was licking her lips.

HA! but leave those louvers on
We didn't have them, and sparrows would lodge in the drier through the vent at night in winter. The filter kept them out of the clothes per se. Once, a mouse. Sometimes they were still alive when I turned on the drier (how toasty and what a rush for them!), and somtimes....not.....("What's that smell?").
