the period that this poem dates from was one were classical themes were used frequently, Spartacus may have risen aginst Rome but Danqal intended his words for Arabs, a cry for them to regain their dignity and stand up against tyrany and oppression. He was fiercely nationalist and he intended these poems for his people yet somehow they feel universal.
