Celibacy was always encouraged by church
it was a means of obtaining wealth. With no family to get in the way, the church was able to gain all the wealth of the priests upon their demise.

these are some of the reasons i left the church........celibacy? give me a break. i grew tired of hearing homilies where a NEW priest was explaining why the OLD priest was no longer w/ the parish. every time i put $ in the basket i was thinking...........hhhmmmm...whom is this $$ being used to defend NOW? so i stopped.
