I'm happy the two of you decided to move forward
I really don't see much difference between what you were doing before you found him still there and what he did afterward.
You did have the advantage of knowing what would attract him, and you used that as bait. Tempting someone beyond their ability to resist is just plain wrong, and I don't know why anyone would do that.
Good luck I hope the two of you grow from this. The internet is a called a web because it's a place that spiders hang out looking for unwarry victims.
