copyright nightmare
From a legal viewpoint she will lose on this one. As long as the fanzines give her the credit for the original work the rest is considered a form of reviews. Whether or not she decides to ever write her own version of the same information is a moot point. The issue is really about revenue and marketing.

Re: majroj
You definitely make a good point there.  I will post more on this subject.

Re: Kabu
Yep, I think that could be definitely IT.

I read one of the Harry Potter companion books.

The initiative they exhibited was like the initiative a remora shows hanging under a shark. Perfectly legal, but they stand to rake in hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars by rehashing the authors hard-won story elements through cut and paste then asking hypothetical questions and advancing vague prognostications about the last Potter book.

They did have the good sense not to use entire chapters or even paragraphs, or artwork, which was (and is) copyrighted, such as book jackets. The "brief passages" clause in international copyright law does not extend to lengthy quotes or the reproduction of art to reproduce the nature of the original work in the new work. Sometimes I hear that the unique fonts may be cited as an example of that.

You know, the writers were wasting my time, but it took a publisher to put it in print and sell it. Probably made the lion's share of the money, too...unless it was self published?

Re: katherine_ann
You know, I'm really on the fence on this, because if I was in her place I would feel the same too.

Re: Geri
If I posted the article without telling who the author is or where did I take it from, it would be copyright infridgement, given that I'm posting it as if it's mine, which it's not.

Isn't it ironic...don't you think?
It's ironic you should post about copyright. Maybe it would have been a better idea to post a link to this article than to copy it here.
