Sorry, ginnie, I can't help you.  To me, music is background noise. Ell keeps telling me who or what is playing and when the band broke up and which one committed suicide.

Some song lyrics are so descriptive of your own life they catch you
by the heart and won't let go.

Hi Azur!
Totally!!  Leonard Cohen is awesome!  Canadian too!    I like your other mentions too!  True that the lyrics need the music but what a fabulous pairing when it happens!

Good music is one thing, but add in brilliant lyrics
and that will transport me. For me it is the lyrics that will determine how often I come back

to a song. Some of the best writing you can see will be in the form of lyrics. I would like to

get the books released recently by Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave. They know how to write lyrics. And Tori Amos, and James, a British band, and this week I listened again to Kate Bush.

Of course look at the lyrics alone and they may not make much sense.

Another one eh Taps?
My new theory is a non-starter that's for sure!

I do believe I've always been drawn more to the music than to the lyrics.  I've often been surprised what the lyrics are long after I'm humming the tune.

Ha! That's really interesting Nautikos!
And that quickly blows my theory that writers are more likely to be drawn to the lyrics than the melody!  You and Steve would get along well!  And ya..no rap or heavy metal..and not so much with the country music either!

Well, I certainly see myself more as a writer than a musician. I can't really play any instruments, though I dabble a bit at clarinet and guitar. But I love music, 'classical' from Bach to Brahms, Jazz, and opera, especially the Italian repertoire. Sopranos give me goose bumps. I like some rock, but no Heavy Metal, and please, no rap...

And the words? I never, ever pay attention to the lyrics! In fact, if I sometimes catch them by accident, they're in one ear out the other. I'm not even particularly interested in the libretto of an opera. They could be singing of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings for all I care...
