Re: I'm not sure why they're so offended
Sira, Steyn was merely repeating what their own imam had said - and even if he hadn't - as you say, he was reporting facts, a fact Muslims are very happy about...

Re: i think people should have the right to choose what they read
littlems, I think a certain amount of censorship is justified at the grade school level - beyond that, there should be no censorship of any kind...(although I definitely draw the line at kiddie porn, but that's a different issue!)

I'm not sure why they're so offended

by that particular line. It sounds like the premise for the statement was based entirely on fact (ie. that the Muslim population is growing at a faster rate than Canadian's). Perhaps it was the use of the word mosquito - comparing them to bugs that bite. Maybe we could just change mosquito to "bunny", since I don't think being compared to something cute and furry would be nearly as frustrating to them. And bunnies do have a fairly high rate of reproduction, so it would still be accurate.

Bottom line - if you don't like the author's views, don't read his book. There's no need to start banning his work, just because a few people have taken exception.

i think people should have the right to choose what they read
but at the same time i can understand where censorship comes in and for what reasons - i guess it comes down to what do we agree should be censored and what should "adults" be entitled to access?

Re: Sometimes, Naut, the western progressive social systems present
It is really astounding that especially our 'progressives' don't seem to be able to grasp the nature of Islamo-fascism...And incidentally, Mein Kampf is banned in Germany. There, they even penalized a man who had taught his dog to do the stiff-armed (or, in this case, stiff-legged) Hitler salute whenever he ordered the dog to 'salute'...And the dog was sent back to school to be 'de-programmed'...

Sometimes, Naut, the western progressive social systems present
themselves as their own worst enemies.  Asinine decisions such as this that holds the work of Mark Steyn in judgment are becoming more and more prevalent.  In social systems that are increasingly more tolerant (or have a history of tolerance), the more that the intolerant authoritarian can use that tolerance to gain a foothold and prosper.  Steyn is protected by freedom of speech laws, yet his book may be banned because of inflammatory or potentially racist, ethnocentric, or intolerant remarks.  What does this say about tolerance?  Even Mein Kampf isn't banned.  This is taking the persecution facade a bit too far.  I hate Rush Limbaugh (yeah, HATE) but I don't think he should be banned.  The same goes for Ann Coulter.  These idiot extremists need to be given voice so that most rational and reasonable people out there can read and listen and learn what it means to be self-righteously elitist and intolerant.  But you don't close them down, shut them up, or ban them.  It's their right to beleive what they wish.  It is Steyn's as well (not to mention that he backs much of his work with quotes, research, and demographic analysis).  This Muslim case is simply using the system to do what they would do if they could totally control the situation themselves -- deny diversity and strip away a right.

Re: I am too, Nautikos (shocked)
Not at all, TAPS! On the contrary! 'Yours truly' here is M.S. speaking. But I'm not sure what's developing with his writings on Islam in the end.

I am too, Nautikos (shocked)
Does this, "...but that the latest bulb to be extinguished was, ahem, yours truly" mean that you will no longer be writing on the subject?
