The dog on the picture seems to have sun damage or psoriasis or both.

The one I met had a very dominant and devilish looking manner. He would come up to me as though he wanted to play tug of war, or with a ball, then just hang onto it and not move. I was not able to move him. He just looked at me levelly, like an angry cop.

The Peruvians have odd claws and not enough teeth.

poor old things, majroj. Looks like mange on his cheeks, but it could

be sun damage. My friends have to bathe their doggie daily in suncreen.

Mexicans call their little children (at least my generation did), itzquintles, (ess-KWINK-lays, to say it fast and incorrectly as they all do) which are the Mexican hairless dogs, those that the Aztecs raised as a food source....the proper name is xoloitzquintle....some say xolos now.

That's like the poor old dead doggie in Texas that someone thought was the chupacabra recently....looks like your Peruvian hairless.....

My daughter's neighbors in Rita Ranch have one, your Peruvian,  and they are darling when cared for and oiled and all that.....the doggies, and not the neighbors, that is....though they might be darling that way, too. Dunno.

Re: Salukis are similar but can be faster and a little bigger.

majroj, my first dog painting years ago was of a Saluki. I had seen some racing rabbit bags on lines in a park, on t.v. and loved the black and white one, so I painted her. She's in my Brasilian girlfriend's kitchen in Santa Barbara, CA.

I still want a bull mastiff, doberman, rottie or pit bull, but I don't have enough discipline or class to have one untrained, so it ain't gonna happen....as I never do proper training, witness Mosinha's wall jumping and refusal to 'come' when called.

Salukis are similar but can be faster and a little bigger.

majroj, and they race like nuts around the doggie park, periodically

with hordes of dogs following them, as tho' the greyhound knows something that they don't. Fun to watch.

I do understand that they define couch potato when retired from racing. We have tons here in Tucson as we have a race track and rescue people. They are everywhere in this town.....seems like everyone has at least one.

Re:StrickGold and dogless....

I am jealous. I would like to know what it is like to be that free. I have resolved to just get one Rottie or Dobie when these three pass on, if they don't outlive me. I know now that three is too many for this old woman.

Enjoy your carefree state as some day you will jump back into the dog fray and be tied to one's heart once again.

majroj, pocket puppies and big ol' doggies

Yup, maj, you either go Great Dane or pocket puppy. My friend has a baby great dane, just turned one and he loves me and is the size of a pony and leans against me and I feel that I am holding up a horse. What a joy. I want one, too.

I also want a Rottie and especially want a Dobie or a mix like Makeda...but, I have three and that is too much, so, I can only dream.

For the first time in 15 yrs
I am dogless and petless--it is nice to be able to go and do things without having to worry about rushing to get back to let the dogs out or finding a place to board them for the holidays though I do miss my babies.

I read this on 01JAN but didn't comment before now.
We're starting a search for "the right dog" again, this time "lap dog" doesn't mean he laps up all the water all the time and is too big to sit with my wife on her on-order special recliner.

Dear Benzinha, You would really appreciate my partner RG
He has spent the better part of the last few years, photographing and recording the names, ages and behaviors (and some sad deaths) of all his doggy friends who spend many happy hours, year round, at the Fresh Pond Reservation, across the street from our house. He put it all together in a book, now available vis LULU.COM. There is color version (expensive) and a b&w version. The folks who buy it are usually the owners of said dogs, although RG doesn't remember their names at all;-)
