Thanx all bloggers.U r the best.Chris,TOLERATION is a baby step in the West
that was essential to end the religious wars that raged between and within European countries since Martin Luther of Germany (1517 & his posting his 95 Theses against the Catholic Church in 1517). At first the Catholic Church persecuted the Protestants, then when Protestants had their own princes, they persecuted competing Protestants, Jews and Catholics. It needed a law to say that no matter who was ruler (Protestant or Catholic) they would unite the nation as Monarch, not as a member of a church --at least in Protestant Europe. It took a new continent and the Enlightenment (when church doctrines were put to the test of logic and REASON) that allowed our Founding Fathers to create the Enlgihtened Document we have as our Constitution. At first we created "states" where specific denominations dominated & persecuted others (the Puritans exiled Anne Hutchinson, Quakers-beheading four among them Mary Dyer, and Roger Williams). Only the Dutch in New York and Roger Williams and few other places (Quaker Pennsylvania) accepted Jewish immigrants. Same with race and the African-American vote--it was not accepted even after the civil war. "Toleration" - meaning allowing them to exist without too loud a fanfare, set the ball rolling toward evolution & aceptance. True revolutions are rare in life & history.

Re: I am stunned by the Pakastani deaths. I don't know why we should be so
Hi Laydi_daydi---very well written-('tho' I'm not too good on history or politics)-but so sad-that such a courageous and strong woman-should be killed! Somehow I believe I half expected this to be her demise! I need to say that I do not consider that I would be content with 'tolerance' as opposed to 'acceptance'!I don't see how we can say we 'telerate' something if-in our hearts-we are unable to fully commit-to full acceptance! God bless-Chris.

shocked in this turbulent world, but it's a blow. Bhutto was a ray of hope, or so it seemed to me, and I'm sorry about her death.

What I said about tolerance being as nice as acceptance --
I believe I said "almost." I'm not sure it's all that flattering to be tolerated, but I have no problem whatsoever with being accepted. For some people, though, tolerance is as good as it's going to get.
As for right and wrong -- sometimes my ideas of wrong differ from others' ideas. I was treated to a lecture on abortion on Christmas day by a naive young girl of the Latter Day Saints persuasion. I've heard her same absolute statement on many previous occasions from conservatives of many stripe. I've seen that same iron decision in the backbone of a slim girl who hasn't actually faced the choice herself. It goes along with a particular idea about who sits on the front pew in heaven, and I can tell you it took a bit of effort to keep smiling and not rip her lungs out. I did, however comment that while I would not have made that choice myself, it was beyond my right to attempt such a decision on behalf of another person, whose problems I cannot see at first glance. She, of course, didn't catch my meaning.

I'm saddened..
by the assassination of Pakistan's iron lady. My condolences to all Pakistanis and others grieving. No, the world cannot and should not just stand by and watch while a large segment of humanity is sufferring so much for so long.
Neil, As far as yours and others' comments on this entry, here's my humble take :
I'm impressed with the breadth and depth of your understanding of history / religion, and your willingness to share your unprejudiced views with others in a way they can relate to.
Tolerance to Acceptance to Appreciation is the path to build & cherish Equality in a world full of Diversity. Different segments of our world-wide family are at different stages of this evolutionary path. I believe that those who are further evolved along this path can and should help others come along.
Blessings to all you wonderful souls,
Ash

I wonder why something as simple as “tolerance” can become such a difficult thing for humanity to embrace?

I'm stunned, I had no idea she had been killed. Her courage is far greater than I could ever begin to comprehend. This world is the loser. May she rest in peace with our heavenly Father. sam

Sad breaking NEWS! A bomb hurt Banazir Bhutto, then gunmen found & shot her
Another martyr like her Father, and like Indira Gandhi, next door! Prayers--duas, shalom and Salaam for a courageous Lady Leader.
