Arranged marriages
To respect others religious beliefs or cultural practices is okay if they don't hurt anyone, but some things are just wrong and should be condemned by all.  Standing up for those abused and victimized is more important than offending anyone.

Thanks for your views on the matter.  I can say that I agree that so many things these days are given "Fancy names" to try and disguise the true meaning behind an act or wrong doing.  In a way it's simply fraud, and attempt to fraud the truth, so to speak and yes murder is murder on whatever scale or for whatever reason. Take care.

I agree with you, but I think some of these acts which are nothing short of
murder now have fancy names, like honour killing and there are other versions of murder that the world often turns a blind eye to, such as the murder of a person who has got out of drugs cos he could end up busting the drug cartel, etc. This is not to compare and say that one murder is worse than the other, but just to say that we need to be aware of all these murders, for murder is murder be it honour killing or whatever.

EX T

Many thanks for your valuable response and input. Yes it is a delicate topic to discuss and can unwhittingly cause unrest etc.  Regarding my view on the "Burka", it is not so much that I sympathise with the wearing or use of it, it's just that I don't see it in the same light or harseness as "Honour" killings, being forced into arranged marriages to a stranger, or harsh punishment that is administered to women in certain cultures where they are punished for innocence.  As I do understand that the wearing of such garments (Burka), were brought about by the dictatership of man etc, I was just trying to seperate the severity of the different issues etc. Your points were much appreciated, as it was nice to read such a indepth response on the topic. Take care.

I guess so, I may well get a few stings for this one, though no offence or discomfort was meant to be caused. Thanks for the response Kayzz. Take care.

I am pleased you are addressing these taboos. For it is exactly what they are. Yet these practices are supported by centuries of tradition. The residents of those countries really believe they are justified practices. I can understand that.

Our western cultures have evolved over the years. Not too long ago laws of the United States made women a chattel of men. Women were summarily beaten and otherwise abused without recourse in the courts. In some cases fathers subscribed to their daughters being treated this way by their husbands. Legally, this is no longer acceptable. That has happened because we have evolved. The other cultures have not.

What we should do is be vigilant and, wherever we exert some influence, indicate loudly that such practices are anathema to the integrity of the human condition. Indeed, western pressure forced the Saudi Arabians to abandon the punishment prescribed for the woman who was raped. We MUST continue to be firm that we will not condone such, or similar practices. Sooner, or later, these cultures will realise the folly of these practices.

I do not agree with your sympathy for the burka. That practice too is not founded on any rational conclusion except that men want to dictate to and dominate women. Please examine your position just one more time.

Lest you misconstrue, I am a vibrant warm blooded virile male.
