"Just do" is an extremely important message.   "Call me if you need anything" is an empty offer.  Like you said, even just go visit the person going through it, have a cup of coffee with them, listen should they choose to talk, or let them talk about something completely different.  Dropping off food is something I've done in the past or if and when someone becomes hospitalized I show up an offer to drive people to and from.  There's plenty of things one can do but you have to just jump on it because the person who's life is turned upside down with someone dying isn't going to call and ask for help.

You're right, death is a part of life.  When I read the journal entries of  pioneers death is a regular part of their world.  I really like the picure of death as an ship sailing around the world out of our view and into another world.  Think of the happiness and love your mom will get from her loved ones on the other side!  And if you have any doubts, let me affirm, there is another life.  I know, I've been there , if only briefly, and I was sad to come back-but needed here. May the joy and peace of this season help heal your heart.
