One opinion I've heard is that when you're young, you should work your butt off while you have the energy to do that, and then you can slow down later, so I guess I'd recommend working for money for a while to get yourself started, then switch and work for love of the job.
I definitely am working for money now. Once upon a time, I enjoyed my job, but now I don't. I'm considering switching actually, but the money is too good to pass up right now.
